Travel has long been a key driver of the global economy. What started with Ancient Greek historian Herodotus setting a sandal-clad foot on the hot shores of Egypt in the 5th century BC has become a $1.9 trillion global market. In 2025 alone, according to the American Express 2025 Global Travel Trends Report, a global travel survey, 74 percent of respondents plan on taking between one and three domestic trips, with 59 percent planning between one and three international excursions.
A Massive and Growing Market
But where will all these weary travelers stay? Even with the increasing popularity of vacation home rentals, such as Airbnb and Wander, hotels worldwide continue to welcome travelers to their properties - the global hotel and resort market was $1.7 trillion in 2024.
Beyond rainfall shower heads, Egyptian cotton bedsheets, and great coffee, 21st-century travelers are looking for instant, seamless communication with the front desk, with housekeeping, with room service…today’s hotels need a communication system that responds to guest needs and requests with the press of a few buttons or a few simple voice commands.

Organizations often start with an open source PBX for flexibility, but as systems move from initial setup to daily operations, the real cost becomes management, maintenance, and long-term reliability. This article explores the difference between building a PBX stack from frameworks and running a commercial, integrated PBX platform, focusing on operational complexity, security responsibility, upgrades, and ongoing maintenance. It explains how a purpose-built PBX shifts the burden from continuous engineering to stable operation, helping teams prioritize clarity, control, and scalability as requirements grow.
