Significant Growth in Global UC&C and CPaaS Markets

In late September 2023, IDC reported significant growth in the global Unified Communications & Collaboration (UC&C) and Communications Platform as a Service (CPaaS) markets. UC&C encompasses solutions like Audio Conferencing, Desktop Sharing, Instant Messaging, IP Telephony, Video Conferencing, Voice, and Web Conferencing. Vodia's communication system seamlessly integrates many UC&C functionalities, enhancing collaboration, flexibility, and productivity for businesses. As a CPaaS provider, Vodia offers developers a cloud platform to add real-time communications features to their applications effortlessly.
In late September 2023, the International Data Corporation (IDC) reported worldwide revenue in the Unified Communications & Collaboration (UC&C) market grew 6.9 percent year-over-year and 2.4 percent sequentially to $15.9 billion in the second quarter of 2023. The worldwide UC market was valued at $136.11 billion in 2023 and is anticipated to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17.4% from last year to 2030, according to Grand View Research.
The global Communications Platform as a Service (CPaaS) market grew 13.2 percent year-over-year and 4.6 percent sequentially to $3.8 billion in the 2nd quarter of 2023, with messaging accounting for the lion’s share of the market. CPaaS revenue should increase 12.4 percent year-over-year to $15.6 billion for all of 2023.
But what is UC&C? It’s neither a single product nor a tool but rather a group of solutions that come together to make real-time collaboration possible. Enterprises and SMBs deploy these solutions to ensure all of their technology provides secure and seamless real-time communications. UC&C often comprises a number of platforms operating in concert, including Audio Conferencing, Desktop Sharing, Instant Messaging (SMS), IP Telephony, Video Conferencing, Voice and Web Conferencing. Many of these functionalities are seamlessly integrated into the Vodia communication system, renowned for its feature-rich capabilities. Vodia’s solution meets any organization’s UC&C needs by facilitating collaboration, improving flexibility and responsiveness, maximizing customer satisfaction, increasing productivity and reducing costs.
CPaaS is a cloud platform to which developers can add real-time communications (RTC) features to their proprietary applications without having to build backend infrastructure and interfaces. Applications for RTC are specifically designed for these functions, including FaceTime, traditional telephony, WhatsApp and Zoom. These apps have been long-time standards for reasons such as ease of use, and because the construction and operation of a communications stack is expensive and time-consuming.
CPaaS, such as the Vodia communication system, is a development framework that enables companies to build RTC features without having to build them from scratch. It enables the addition of such features as messaging and voice chat. CPaaS usually provides developers with APIs, pre-built apps, sample code and software tools, with product documentation and support. Some CPaaS providers, such as Vodia, make SDKs and libraries available for building custom applications.
Here are some UC&C and CPaaS highlights from 2023 from some of the biggest players, per IDC:
UC&C
MicrosoftUC&C revenue rose 20 percent year-over-year to $6.8 billion in 2Q23, accounting for 42.8 percent of market share.
ZoomUC&C revenue grew 2.5 percent year-over-year in 2Q23 to $1.1 billion, 6.8 percent of market share.
Cisco UC&C market share grew to 6 percent.
CPaaS
Twilio leads the global CPaaS market with a 24.1 percent market share. Its revenue surpassed $913 million in 2Q23, growing 15.8 percent year-over-year.
Sinch now occupies second place in global CPaaS sales with 15.8 percent market share and revenue of $600 million in 2Q23.
"Remote collaboration needs continue to grow and evolve with the changing dynamics led by the return to work, coupled with new innovation from vendors, especially on the AI front," said Jitesh Gera, research manager, Unified Communications and Collaboration at IDC. "Moreover, public cloud Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS) solutions integrated with telephony continue to be in strong demand as businesses increasingly look to unify their employee and customer communication channels with a strong foundation in voice.”
