Entering the Provisioning URL via the Cisco 3PCC Desktop Phones Web Interface

Published on:

October 29, 2021

Vodia’s PBX facilitates the automatic provisioning of Cisco 3PCC devices, such as the 68xx, 78xx and 88xx series, through zero-touch LAN provisioning. To start, users must reset the Cisco 3PCC phone by disconnecting the power, waiting a few seconds and then following a specific key sequence. To upgrade the phone, it’s essential to host the firmware on an HTTP or TFTP server and input the correct URL in the Vodia interface. The authentication settings allow for consistent credentials across devices, streamlining the provisioning process. Finally, by entering the correct provisioning URL in the Cisco phone's web interface, users can easily pair their devices with the Vodia PBX, ensuring efficient communication without needing to reboot the phone.

The Vodia PBX automatically provisions Cisco 3PPC devices (68xx, 78xx and 88xx) via zero-touch LAN provisioning. This example is based on the 8841 model, but it will also work for Cisco phone 7800 and 6800 series. The devices should be running sip88xx.11-0-0MPP-7.loads or the latest build available.

Resetting Your Cisco 3PCC Series Phone

  • Remove power from the phone by unplugging the power adapter
  • Wait 5 seconds
  • Press and hold # and plug the phone back in
  • When the headset and speaker buttons are lit, release # and enter the following key sequence: 123456789*0#

Upgrading Your Phone

Make sure you host the firmware with an HTTP server or TFTP server, (find the TFTP folder of the PBX inside /usr/local/pbx/tftp; if the folder isn’t found, please create a new one) and it looks like this URL: http://ip_address_server_with_files/sip88xx.11-0-0MPP-7.loads. To prevent typos you could just copy-paste the filename, then submit the upgrade URL under Advance→ Voice →Provisioning setting field Upgrade Rule, then save the changes.

Provisioning

When provisioning a Cisco 3PPC desktop phone, you should first set the required settings on the Vodia PBX as shown in the provisioning document, Steps Before Provisioning.

The Authentication user, Authentication password and Authentication PIN settings enable administrators to use identical usernames and passwords for all devices in a particular domain, simplifying the authentication process from the GUI of the phone when the phone is provisioned to the Vodia PBX.

Provisioning the Cisco 3PPC phone

Log in to the web interface of the Cisco 3PPC and, according to the model, navigate to the page where you can enter the provisioning server address. In models SPA504G and SPA525G, the setting is called Profile Rule and found on page "Admin" -> "Advanced" provisioning; with other models, it could be on another page (you can find this page in the documentation for the respective model).

In the Profile Rule setting, add this URL: http://PBXIP/csc$MA.cfg, where the PBX IP is the IP or resolvable domain of the PBX server. The phone will auto-provision without having to be rebooted.

Why Area Codes Still Matter in a Mobile World

Even in 2025, area codes remain important for personal and business communications. People move frequently but usually keep their original phone numbers because changing them is inconvenient and tied to banking, two-factor authentication, and multiple online accounts. For PBX administrators, area codes are essential for routing calls accurately, displaying the correct caller ID, and managing costs. Vodia PBX simplifies area code management with pattern-based dial plans, automatic updates, and smart trunk selection. This ensures that calls reach the right destination efficiently, maintain a local presence to increase pickup rates, and provide reliable communication both in North America and internationally.

Keycloak OpenID Connect Integration for the Vodia PBX

Vodia’s PBX now integrates with Keycloak OpenID Connect, providing secure single sign-on for users so they can access all connected applications without repeated authentication. Logging out from one application automatically logs the user out of all connected systems, simplifying user management and improving security. Keycloak, a Cloud Native Computing Foundation project, supports standard protocols including OpenID Connect, OAuth 2.0, and SAML, offering enterprise-grade identity and access management. To ensure proper integration, Keycloak user emails must match the corresponding PBX extension emails. Complete guidance is available in the Vodia Keycloak integration guide.
