Cisco IP Phone Series 6800, 7800, and 8800 devices running Multiplatform (MPP / 3PCC) firmware can be used with the Vodia PBX in SIP-based environments. Supported models span entry-level, mid-range, and advanced devices commonly deployed in enterprise and service provider scenarios. Cisco-provided MPP firmware is used, with firmware versions and upgrades managed through the PBX after initial onboarding, supporting both on-premises and cloud deployments.

The Vodia PBX supports Cisco IP Phone Series 6800, 7800, and 8800 devices running Multiplatform (MPP / 3PCC) firmware. These models are widely used in enterprise and service provider environments and are commonly deployed with SIP-based third-party phone systems.

With Vodia, Cisco MPP phones can be onboarded and managed within the PBX, including configuration and firmware version control using Cisco-provided Multiplatform firmware. This allows organizations to continue using existing Cisco hardware in on-premises or cloud PBX deployments.

Firmware Types

  • Multiplatform (MPP / 3PCC) Firmware: SIP-based firmware used for third-party phone systems, such as Vodia, is distributed as ZIP archives containing a .loads firmware file. Please note: Cisco Enterprise (CUCM) firmware is not used in Vodia environments.
  • Recommended Method (Upgrade Rule): Vodia recommends upgrading Cisco MPP phones using the Upgrade Rule. This method is persistent, provisioning-friendly, and suitable for production deployments.
  • Cisco Browser-Based Upgrade: Cisco also documents a browser-based upgrade method that triggers a one-time firmware update. This method is useful for manual upgrades or recovery scenarios, but we do not recommend it for large deployments.

Desk phones, mobile apps, or both? Choosing the right setup for business calls

Desk phones and mobile apps both have a place in modern business communications. IP desk phones remain a strong choice for receptionists, support teams, customer service agents, and employees who handle a high volume of calls from a fixed location. Mobile apps, on the other hand, give remote, hybrid, and field-based users access to their business extension wherever they work. For many organizations, the best answer is not choosing one over the other, but using both through the same PBX environment so every user has the right calling tool for their role.
