Vodia CEO Christian Stredicke recently joined Technology Reseller News to discuss how AI is reshaping business communications. With the release of Vodia PBX version 69.5.6, features like real-time OpenAI integration and call transcription via Whisper are setting the stage for voice-driven interactions—replacing complex phone menus with simple spoken commands. Christian emphasized Vodia’s goal of using AI to improve productivity and customer experience, while recognizing the importance of tailoring AI applications to specific industries. He likened today’s AI shift to the early days of the web, where expert guidance is key to successful adoption.
Vodia founder and CEO Christian Stredicke sat down with Doug Green, publisher of Technology Reseller News, to discuss the juggernaut of AI and how it’s becoming ever more important in business communications. Vodia is currently working on the intersection of AI and business phone systems, and Christian sat down with Doug to examine the current landscape and discuss the Vodia AI roadmap.
AI is going to become a core component of the Vodia PBX. Vodia recently announced version 69.5.6 of its industry-standard PBX, which includes key updates specifically for AI, including real-time AI integration with OpenAI and call transcriptions through the Whisper API. “Imagine a world where users can simply say, ‘Connect me to accounting’ instead of navigating complex menus. That’s where AI is taking us,” Christian says.
The deployment of AI continues to increase exponentially worldwide. According to Precedence Research, the global AI market was $638.23 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach approximately three-and-a-half trillion dollars by 2034. For Vodia, the exciting question we continue to address is, how can we use this technology within the context of our PBX? The answer is, we are trying to use it everywhere.
Doug begins the podcast with a rather pointed observation: “today we’re going to have two words that, interestingly enough, are seldom used in the same sentence, that is ‘AI’ and ‘PBX.’ I love that you actually put these two topics together.”
“We want to understand it and use it very productively,” Christian says. “It’s important for every company to understand it. I think it has huge potential for the future.”
Simply put, keypads may ultimately be replaced with (spoken) keywords - this will of course drive CX to higher plateaus, once user acceptance catches up to the technology and customers become used to the effectiveness and immediate response voice commands provide.
“We are at a point in time where certain things can be automated very well,” Christian says. “For example, you say, ‘I want to talk to sales - boom, you get transferred to sales.’” At this point in our AI journey, Vodia is working to discern exactly where AI will streamline communications and increase productivity, as opposed to instances where its application might be considered overreaching. “We have to find out, over the coming months and years, where we have a good customer experience.”
Doug observes that, “market by market, there’s going to be a specific application in each market for AI.”
“For me that’s crystal-clear,” Christian replies, “so there’s a lot of detail work to do, in each industry and maybe for every single client.” Christian also makes an analogy to the 1990s, when every company needed a web page and needed someone to build it: “I think that is what’s coming with AI. Companies see the need for AI, but don’t really know ‘how to do it,’ so people with experience with it can really help to AI-enable those companies.”
So when it comes to AI and the Vodia PBX, what is Vodia’s mission? “We’re trying to provide a tool for adopting AI in day-to-day business,” Christian says.

Skills-based routing in V70 helps ensure incoming calls are matched with the most qualified available agents based on defined skills, language, and expertise. By combining IVR input with intelligent call distribution, organizations can reduce unnecessary transfers, improve first-contact resolution, and shorten handling time. With V70, skills can be defined directly within the PBX, allowing teams to set thresholds, prioritize expertise, and control how calls are routed across departments, queues, and different operational environments.
PBX snapshots in V70 provide a reliable way to capture system state before changes are applied, enabling fast recovery, controlled rollback, and more predictable system management when updating configurations, testing call flows, or operating across multiple tenants. By preserving a point-in-time version of the system, administrators can reduce the risk of disruption, restore services quickly when issues arise, and maintain stability while making ongoing changes in complex communication environments.
V70 introduces emergency alerts and notifications designed to ensure critical events are not missed and responses happen immediately. Alerts can be triggered directly by users, delivered across multiple channels including phones, email, mobile apps, and SMS, and can automatically initiate calls to predefined numbers. Administrators have full control over how alerts are configured, enabling consistent, reliable handling of incidents across real-world, multi-tenant environments.
