As Challenges Bite, the Cloud Becomes an Essential Business Tool

There are many reasons to opt for cloud connectivity. Anecdotal evidence suggests about a third of South African businesses have moved their telecoms services to the cloud. PBX solutions hosted in the cloud make it so any enterprise or SME can benefit from corporate-quality unified communications platforms without the need for clunky physical equipment.

The recent implementation of stage load shedding has seen added interest in cloud services from local firms eager to insulate themselves from South Africa’s energy fallout. A 2019 cloud survey published earlier this year shed light on cloud adoption by South African businesses: 77 percent of SA businesses are using cloud services in their IT departments.

“Having real-time remote access to reliable back-ups is the number one reason for cloud adoption,” and we’re certain the number of businesses moving to the cloud will eclipse the 80 percent mark by the New Year,” said Riaan van Stryp, Chief Operating Officer of ICTGlobe.com.

The expected uptick in cloud adoption can be attributed to a growing realisation amongst businesses that access to basic utilities cannot be guaranteed in 2021 and beyond, and the Cloud enables business as usual. “Data back-up and disaster recovery are eclipsing cost savings as the number one reason to go cloud,” added Mr. Van Stryp.

And working smarter, remotely, with the latest cloud technology is the best way to avoid the ongoing load shedding fallout in South Africa. Aside from providing virtual immunity against load shedding, moving telecoms to the cloud is also an effective solution to the ongoing challenge of cable theft and other crimes affecting local firms’ access to ICT services.

This holiday season, South African executives, SME owners, IT managers and others who opted for cloud services will be able to relax at the berg, bush and beach, secure in the knowledge their valuable IP assets are always reachable from any connected device from anywhere in the world.

Finally, in a tight business environment, both domestic and overseas, “cloud-based ICT services enable companies to access world-leading technology on a very modest budget and without any significant capital investment,” Mr. van Stryp concluded.

Connecting to OpenAI Realtime API

This document details the beta version of the Vodia PBX that connects to the OpenAI realtime API, enabling users to interact with a chatbot via telephone. The backend JavaScript code facilitates the connection, handling audio input and output, and the WebSocket connection to the OpenAI API. The setup requires a Vodia PBX version 69.5.3 or higher, an API key, and a license with an IVR node. The demo can be accessed by editing the ivrnode.js template and creating an IVR node in the tenant. The system supports various VoIP devices and offers good voice quality. Future improvements include voice activity detection and the ability to take actions based on OpenAI responses.
